Botox and Dysport

What are Botox and Dysport?

Botox and Dysport are injectable products that are each considered neuromodulators or neurotoxins. These injectables are used to soften dynamic wrinkles, or the wrinkles that form when you make facial expressions. Botox is the most well-known of these products, but each works in more or less the same way.

How Do Botox and Dysport Work?

Botox and Dysport each work using a purified botulinum toxin. Once injected, the product works to block nerve reception in the targeted muscles, ultimately causing them to relax. This helps to soften dynamic wrinkles by reducing the movement of the muscles that cause extreme facial expressions like frowning or squinting. It can also be used preventatively to stop deep wrinkles from forming or fine lines from worsening due to repeated facial movements. At the same time, patients can still freely express themselves, and results should appear natural. Botox and Dysport injections are particularly beneficial for crow’s feet, glabellar lines (11 lines), or horizontal forehead lines.

Who is a Candidate for Botox and Dysport?

Most patients who are concerned with dynamic wrinkles are good candidates for Botox and Dysport injections. During a consultation, your health history will be reviewed to ensure that injections are safe for you; patients with certain allergies or health complications such as bleeding disorders may not be suited to neuromodulator injections. Your injector will also review your concerns to ensure that neuromodulators are best suited to address your wrinkles. For example, some wrinkles may instead be caused by volume loss and better treated by dermal fillers.

After determining that neuromodulators are a good option for you, your injector at Maxwell Aesthetics can then help you determine which product is best for you. While Botox and Dysport all use botulinum toxin, the three formulas vary somewhat. Some patients may prefer results from one product over another, while others may choose based on their budget or other factors.

Is There Downtime After Botox and Dysport Injections?

Botox and Dysport injections require no downtime or extended recovery period. Following injections, it is best to avoid strenuous exercise, sun exposure, or touching the injection site. However, you can otherwise return to your routine as normal. You may notice swelling, redness, or bruising, but these should dissipate quickly. Results will be noticeable within about 1-2 weeks after your injections.

Botox and Dysport results are not permanent. On average, results from neuromodulators last about four months. After this time, you can receive maintenance injections to keep up with your new, youthful look. Some patients find that their results last longer as they continue to receive repeated injections. During your consultation, you can discuss a long-term plan for your results, including routine maintenance injections, if you choose.
