What is Breast Augmentation?

Optimizing the size and shape of your breasts brings your body proportions into beautiful balance. As a woman and a surgeon, Dr. Maxwell understands and relates to your concerns about breast size and shape, and she will guide you every step of the way. In a detailed consultation, Dr. Maxwell will make personalized recommendations, taking into account your skin quality and body frame. State-of-the-art 3-D imaging allows you to view various options and, working together, select the breast shape and size that’s right for you. You will also discuss and select implants filled with saline or silicone gel.

Who is a Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

Patients may be candidates for breast augmentation if they are unsatisfied with the appearance of their breasts due to a smaller size, lack of volume, or asymmetry. The surgery is suitable for patients who have fully developed, are physically healthy, and are not pregnant or breastfeeding. Patients may also be good candidates for the procedure is they have abnormal breasts which developed in an elongated shape, or if they have lost volume in their breasts over time due to breastfeeding or the natural aging process. During a consultation, Dr. Maxwell will discuss your goals and expectations with you to determine whether a breast augmentation is your best option. She will also review your health history to ensure that surgery will be safe for you. Before you undergo a breast augmentation, it is best if you are a nonsmoker, as smoking can interfere with the healing process.

The Breast Augmentation Procedure

Breast augmentation is performed under IV sedation or general anesthesia, so you will be unconscious throughout the surgery. Incisions are made either around the areola (periareolar), below the breast fold (inframammary), or in the armpit (transaxillary). The incision technique used in your procedure will depend on factors like the type and size of implant you have chosen, the amount of natural breast tissue you have, and your goal results. Dr. Maxwell will explain which option is best for you and why. In any case, scars are minimal and well-concealed by the natural contours of the body. Once incisions are made, breast implants are placed either above or below the chest muscle; again, this depends on your goal results and the implants you have chosen. With the implant in place, Dr. Maxwell will then close the incisions using sutures to complete the surgery.

Recovery and Results After Breast Augmentation

You can return home the same day as your breast augmentation surgery but should have someone who can drive you and care for you early in the healing process. Temporary soreness and discomfort may be felt in the breasts for 1-2 days. Dr. Maxwell will prescribe pain medication to keep you comfortable. You will also wear a supportive surgical bra throughout the recovery process which will help minimize swelling or discomfort. Typically, our patients return to work in less than a week and most resume active exercise after 4-6 weeks. Dr. Maxwell will monitor your recovery process through post-operative appointments and inform you when it is safe to return to all activities.
