Dr. Silvia Kurtovic is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon who is fellowship trained in breast reconstruction and microsurgery, as well as cosmetic surgery. She began her private practice in Austin, Texas and quickly built a reputation for compassionate care and excellent results. After her first visit to Tucson, she immediately connected to the town’s vibrant spirit and couldn’t wait to call it home. She is excited to bring her expertise in reconstructive and cosmetic breast surgery to the Tucson community.
Dr. Kurtovic grew up in southern California and graduated with honors from the University of California, Los Angeles in physiological sciences. Upon earning her medical degree in New York at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, she competed a decade of rigorous post-graduate surgical training in top-ranking residency and fellowship programs across North America. She did her general surgery residency at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, at which time she developed her interest in the artistry of plastic surgery. Dr. Kurtovic was inspired by the ability of plastic surgeons to transform and restore the human body, both physically and emotionally, and she chose to pursue further specialization in plastic and reconstructive surgery at Duke University. Immersed in an environment of world leaders in reconstructive surgery, Dr. Kurtovic knew she wanted to provide advanced reconstructive surgical options for breast cancer patients.
Dr. Kurtovic earned the highly competitive international microsurgery fellowship under the mentorship of Dr. Edward Buchel at the University of Manitoba Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, Canada, where she performed advanced techniques in muscle-sparing perforator flap (DIEP flap) breast reconstruction. She then completed a second Canadian fellowship at the University of British Columbia in cosmetic and comprehensive breast surgery under the mentorship of Dr. Brian Peterson, a premier aesthetic surgeon known for his long-lasting, natural results.
Inspired by her mother’s breast cancer journey, Dr. Kurtovic has a unique awareness of and connection to her breast reconstruction patients. She is committed to providing them the space they need to begin healing, both physically and emotionally. She believes the most important interaction is when she meets a new patient for the first time in consultation. She welcomes patients to tell her their stories so she can better understand what is important to them, before discussing surgical options. She understands every woman is unique and deserves a personalized approach to her breast cancer recovery.
When not in the hospital or clinic, Dr. Kurtovic enjoys drawing, cooking, baking, traveling and spending time with friends and family. She is an animal lover and proud mama to Nyla, her goofy greyhound rescue. She is a yogi who loves exploring and connecting with nature, and practices mindfulness as much as possible.
