Plastic Surgery – Face

What is a face lift?

Facelifting is a comprehensive term that describes rejuvenation of the aging face. All facial structures change with age. Fat volume is lost, skin becomes lax and damaged, the boney skeleton that supports the facial structures goes through changes as well.

A facelift can be looked at as three separate parts: the upper face and eyes, the middle face and jawline and the neck. All three normally age together and so correction is best seen when all aspects are addressed together. This leaves a more harmonious appearance to the face and neck.

Incisions will be made around the ears and under the chin and layers of the face are separated and lifted and then secured by internal sutures in a higher, more lifted location. Excess skin and fat are carefully removed, and the incisions are sculpted and designed to minimize the appearance of any scars.

There is a plethora of descriptions for facelifts, and these are confusing to patients. Dr. Maxwell is an expert in the facelift procedure and will tailor your facelift to fit and compliment your needs. During the consultation you will meet with one of the Patient Coordinators who will take your photographs and merge your image into a software that can morph your face in the ways that Dr. Maxwell recommends. This gives you a rough idea of what to expect. Dr. Maxwell has years of clinical experience, and her patients are proud to share their results and journey with you.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Face Lift?

Have you caught yourself looking in the mirror and pulling your face laterally to see a face that seems more familiar? Have you seen yourself in a candid photo and felt shocked at your appearance? You may be ready for a facelift.

The Face Lift Procedure

Consultation and Planning

  • Initial Consultation: Meet with your Dr. Maxwell to discuss goals, expectations, and medical history.
  • Customization: Dr. Maxwell assesses facial structure, skin elasticity, and areas to target (e.g., cheeks, jawline).
  • Pre-Op Instructions: Receive guidance on medications to avoid, smoking cessation, and any necessary lab tests.

Preparation and Anesthesia

  • Pre-Surgery Prep: On the day of surgery, the face is cleaned, and incision areas are marked.
  • Anesthesia: General anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation is administered to ensure comfort during the procedure.

Surgical Procedure

  • Incisions: Dr. Maxwell makes incisions around the hairline, temples, and behind the ears to access underlying tissues.
  • Tissue Adjustment: Muscles and deeper facial tissues are repositioned, excess skin is removed, and the skin is redraped.
  • Closing Incisions: The incisions are closed with sutures or skin adhesives, ensuring minimal scarring.

Recovery and Aftercare

  • Post-Op Recovery: Expect some swelling and bruising; bandages may be applied to support healing.
  • Follow-Up Care: Attend follow-up appointments to monitor healing. Follow care instructions, such as keeping the head elevated and avoiding strenuous activities.
  • Long-Term Results: Full results will become visible as swelling subsides, with lasting effects typically seen within a few months. Regular skincare can help maintain results.

Face Lift Recovery and Results

Recovery time for the Facelift is similar to that of the Browlift: 10 to 14 days, with some bruising and swelling around the eyes. You may be prescribed a pain medication to keep comfortable throughout recovery. Keeping your head elevated as you rest can help reduce swelling.

Some numbness in the face may occur, which persists for variable periods of time.
