What is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift, or Mastopexy, restores perkiness to sagging breasts. Breast sag can result from pregnancy, weight gain or extreme enlargement of the breast during puberty, affecting your body contour, clothes choice and self-image. Based on how much the areola has fallen, soft tissues are lifted, skin tightened and the areola moved upward, reshaping and uplifting the breast for a more youthful appearance.

If you choose, breast enlargement can be included with your breast lift. This dual procedure is more extensive—the implant is placed under the muscle, and the soft tissues are then lifted around it, giving you fuller, younger-looking breasts in addition to uplift. Dr. Maxwell’s patients express a high degree of satisfaction following these procedures.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Breast Lift?

Most patients who are concerned about drooping or sagging breasts are good candidates for a breast lift. This is most common among women who face sagging after breastfeeding, weight loss, or the natural aging process. A good indicator of whether you may benefit from a breast lift is if your areolas and nipples point downward and fall below the breast crease. Dr. Maxwell may also suggest implants for a combination of breast lift and breast augmentation if volume loss is a concern.

Before undergoing a breast lift, you should be generally healthy, maintaining a stable weight, and a nonsmoker. During your consultation, Dr. Maxwell will examine your breasts and review your health history to decide whether a breast lift is a safe and suitable surgery for you.

The Breast Lift Procedure

Anesthesia and Sedation

Breast lifts are performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation.

Incision Placement

Incisions may be made in a variety of techniques or patterns depending on factors such as your breast size and desired results. Some options that Dr. Maxwell may use include:

  • Around the areola
  • Around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease in a lollipop pattern
  • Around the areola, vertically to the breast crease, and horizontally along the breast crease in an anchor pattern

Tissue Reshaping and Repositioning

Once incisions are made, Dr. Maxwell can reshape and redistribute the breast tissue for a lifted and more youthful look. The nipples may also be repositioned for a natural look. If necessary, Dr. Maxwell may also reduce the areolas to ensure a proportionate appearance with the new breast shape. Excess skin can be removed as needed.

Closure

When all of these steps are complete, the incisions are closed with sutures.

Recovery and Results After a Breast Lift

During your breast lift recovery, you will wear a lightweight, supportive bra and can take pain medication as prescribed to stay comfortable. Most patients require about a week to rest and recover before they are ready to return to their normal routines, such as work or school. You should wait at least four weeks before attempting strenuous activity like exercise or lifting heavy objects. During post-operative appointments, Dr. Maxwell will monitor your healing and let you know when you can return to all of your normal activities.
