What is Breast Implant Exchange?
You once loved the results of your previous breast augmentation, but now your breast implants no longer meet your aesthetic preferences, lifestyle, or other needs. If you choose to modify the shape of your breasts, another implant can be selected to match your preferred shape and size, leaving you with soft, shapely, beautiful and comfortable breasts. Dr. Maxwell will help you explore the options and various types of implants available.
Who is a Candidate for Breast Implant Exchange?
A majority of patients who are no longer satisfied with their breast implants are good candidates for breast implant exchange. There are many reasons why this may be the case. You may no longer appreciate the look of your old breast implants, whether you feel they are too large or too small for your current preferences. It is also possible that your breast implants no longer suit your lifestyle; for example, larger breast implants may no longer be comfortable if you are now more active in certain sports or exercise activities. Finally, you may face complications from old implants like capsular contracture or implant rupture that require replacement. Whatever the case may be, Dr. Maxwell can help you select new implants that meet your needs and look beautiful and proportionate with your body. Candidates for breast implant exchange should be generally healthy overall to ensure that the surgery is safe for them, so Dr. Maxwell will review your health history and any medications you take during your consultation.
Breast Implant Exchange Procedure
Anesthesia and Sedation
Breast implant exchanges are performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation.
Incision and Removal
Dr. Maxwell will make incisions along the breast crease in a similar pattern to a breast augmentation. If a breast lift is required, incisions will also be made vertically from the areola to the crease. Through these incisions, the old implants (along with any damaged or firm scar tissue) can be removed.
Implant Placement and Closure
New implants are placed, and the incisions are closed using sutures.
Post-Procedure Care
When these steps are complete, bandages and a supportive surgical bra will be placed on the breasts as necessary. You can return home the same day as your surgery and should arrange for a trusted family member or friend to drive you home and care for you.
Recovery and Results After Breast Implant Exchange
Your experience recovering after breast implant exchange will likely be similar to your experience after your initial breast augmentation, though some side effects or symptoms may be slightly more intense. Breast implant exchange is typically a more complex procedure. Dr. Maxwell will prescribe pain medication to keep you comfortable after your surgery. You can expect bruising and swelling, and should prioritize rest for at least a week before returning to work, school, or other routines. Avoid bending at the waist or lifting heavy objects until Dr. Maxwell has determined it is safe for you to do so.
