What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?
The most effective way to diminish wrinkling of the skin is with a laser. Truly a revolution in plastic surgery, laser skin resurfacing began in 1995, using the first FDA-approved device. We now have second generation lasers, including the Erbium YAG® laser, which we use in our practice. Today’s lasers generate less heat, allowing greater control in the depth of treatment. Everything from brown spots to deep wrinkles can be treated with the Erbium laser. The laser resurfaces the skin by causing the skin to deposit new and tighter collagen bundles.
Who is a Good Candidate for Laser Skin Resurfacing?
A majority of patients who have wrinkles and other aging signs but do not wish to undergo a surgical procedure like a facelift are good candidates for laser skin resurfacing. However, the procedure is not suitable for those who have active acne, darker skin tones, or excessive deep wrinkles and sagging. During a consultation, Dr. Maxwell will evaluate your concerns and advise whether laser skin resurfacing is sufficient to treat your wrinkles or another option, such as a facelift or brow lift, is necessary. She will also determine whether your skin tone is suitable for the procedure, as those with darker skin tones are susceptible to hyperpigmentation or other types of damage from laser skin resurfacing. Finally, Dr. Maxwell will review your medical history to ensure that laser skin resurfacing is a safe option for you.
Laser Skin Resurfacing Procedure
Anesthesia and Sedation
Laser skin resurfacing can be completed with local anesthesia or topical numbing products alone. This helps you remain comfortable throughout the procedure.
Numbing the Skin
Once the skin is numb, Dr. Maxwell will direct the laser at the treatment area.
Laser Treatment
The Erbium laser works by heating the water found within the skin, which results in superficial skin cells being removed and controlled thermal injuries to the skin, triggering the natural collagen production and healing response.
Procedure Duration
Typically, Erbium laser treatments are completed in about two hours.
Recovery and Results After Laser Skin Resurfacing
Recovery from laser resurfacing can be more extensive than with other cosmetic procedures; redness can persist for many months following treatment. Most patients, however, find that the multiple benefits – removal of skin discoloration, decreased wrinkling and tighter, more youthful skin – far outweigh the discomfort during the recovery process. On average, patients require about two weeks of downtime after the procedure. As you heal, you should take care to avoid sun exposure as much as possible and follow Dr. Maxwell’s instructions regarding skincare or other concerns.
Laser skin resurfacing diminishes wrinkles and age spots, restoring radiance and a beautiful complexion. These results are not permanent but will be long-lasting. Dr. Maxwell can explain more of what you can expect from your results during your consultation.
