Platelet Rich Plasma Injections

Platelet Rich Plasma

Platelet Rich Plasma

PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma is obtained through a blood draw and spun down in a special centrifuge. Once the plasma is separated from the rest of the blood it is then  micro-needled into the skin. PRP can provide younger, healthier looking skin by reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improving textural issues and reducing acne scarring.

What is Microneedling with PRP?

Microneedling is a cosmetic treatment in which a handheld tool containing tiny needles is used to create micro-injuries in the skin, which stimulates new collagen production and healthy skin cell turnover. This can be used to treat issues like hyperpigmentation, sun damage, scars, stretch marks, wrinkles, and fine lines. PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, can be added to microneedling treatment to increase effectiveness. The PRP is applied to the skin following a microneedling treatment so that it can more effectively penetrate deeper layers of the skin though the small channels created by the needles. This treatment is sometimes referred to as a “vampire facial.”

Who is a Good Candidate for Microneedling with PRP?

Microneedling with PRP can be beneficial for patients struggling with a wide range of concerns. These include scarring (such as acne or surgical scars), wrinkles, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, sunspots or other sun damage, enlarged pores, or generally uneven texture. In particular, it is usually recommended as a treatment for acne scars and aging signs.

Microneedling with PRP is not safe for patients who have certain medical conditions. This includes those who are pregnant as well as those with certain skin conditions like active acne, eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea. It is also not recommended for those who take Accutane or those who have a history of bruising or scarring easily. Finally, patients with blood or platelet disorders should not undergo microneedling with PRP.

During a consultation in our Med Spa, your health history and skin condition can be evaluated to determine whether microneedling with PRP is right for you. If not, our team can recommend an alternative treatment option that is better suited to your needs.

What is the Microneedling with PRP Procedure Like?

The first step of the microneedling with PRP procedure is to collect a sample of your blood. This is then prepared in a centrifuge to separate the PRP. Next, a topical anesthetic may be applied to the skin to ensure your comfort during the microneedling process. A small pen-like tool containing microneedles is then applied to the treatment area to create tiny and controlled injuries in the skin. Once the microneedling is complete, the PRP is applied to the treatment area. The micro-injuries formed during the microneedling process act as channels for the PRP to reach deeper layers of the skin. The skin will then produce new collagen and healthy skin cells.

Recovery and Results After Microneedling with PRP

Microneedling with PRP generally requires no downtime. However, you will likely see side effects including tenderness, redness, and potential mild bruising. These side effects will clear in no more than 4-5 days as the skin heals and regenerates healthy skin cells. Over-the-counter pain medication can help keep you comfortable as the skin heals.

Most patients undergo multiple microneedling sessions to achieve their best results. During a consultation, a treatment plan tailored to your needs will be developed.
